How to fix Windows Update?

Troubleshooter

As a first step, try running the Computer Troubleshooting and Prevention Tool . The fastest way to do this is to press Win + R and run the  control.exe / name Microsoft.Troubleshooting command . In the System and Security section, select Repair Windows Update issues . While this step is unlikely to help you (that’s why this board is labeled Council 0), it’s a good foundation.

Reset Windows Update

This advice is probably the best and most versatile (Win 7, Win 8, Win 10, + server editions) we can give you. One of the highly effective ways to fix Windows updates is to restart the updates. This is done as follows.

  • run the command line ( cmd ) as administrators
  • run the command:  net stop bits
  • run the command:  net stop wuauserv
  • rename the C: \ Windows \ SoftwareDistribution directory to  C: \ Windows \ SoftwareDistribution.old
  • run the command:  net start bits
  • run the command:  net start wuauserv
  • Restart the PC

After following these steps, give your computer some time to get confused. It happened to us that after performing the above steps, it took about a day for the computer to start updating.

Great tip for a million. Microsoft has prepared a special highly complex Windows Update fix script for more proficient English users, which can be found on the MS Technet website. Specifically HERE .

catroot2

If the previous steps did not help, it is recommended that you rename the C: \ Windows \ system32 \ catroot2 directory to catroot2.old. This directory also serves Windows Update and contains signatures of WU packages. After renaming it, a new one will be created again

  • run the command line ( cmd ) as administrators
  • run the command:  net stop CryptSvc
  • rename the C: \ Windows \ SoftwareDistribution directory to  C: \ Windows \ SoftwareDistribution.old
  • run the command:  net start CryptSvc

Reinstall Windows Update

Reinstalling Windows Update (WU) usually doesn’t solve much, but if the updates don’t work for you, then it’s quite likely that you have an old version of WU installed. Warning, download WU updates only from Microsoft websites.

Firewall

Under normal circumstances, the firewall is not an obstacle to updates, however, if you are a computer saver and have ever played with the firewall, it is not a good idea to turn it off completely, at least for a while.

Disk Check

The Windows NTFS file system is now primitive and error-prone. So it’s not a good idea to check the disk. This is best done on the command line (cmd), which you must run again as administrators and then run chkdsk c: / r / f  . This starts an in-depth scan of the entire disk, which cannot be done while Win is running, so you must then confirm that the scan is performed when the PC starts.

System File Checker

You may not know it, but Windows has a pretty handy utility that can check system files and sometimes fix / replace them in case of problems. You do this on the command line using the  sfc / scannow command . The utility generates a log file, which can be found in C: \ Windows \ Logs \ CBS \ CBS.log. However, if you are not familiar with Windows, there is no point in trying to read it.

Reset Windows to factory settings

This board is for Windows 10 . These can be reset to a state in which everything should work properly. This is a big intervention in the computer (all installed programs will be uninstalled), which we recommend to do only when you no longer know where to go. And how to do it – Win Key / Start >  Settings > Updates and Security > Restore Computer to Factory Defaults > Run . Be sure to select the “Keep my files” option. Just to be on the safe side, we recommend backing up all your files, certificates, programs / program settings, etc.
